The variance of A is smaller than the variance of B, so therefore A is the better estimator. Small is beautiful. The variance of A is smaller than the variance of B, so therefore B is the better estimator. Bigger is better. If both estimators are unbiased, they are both equally good. Because both estimators are unbiased, we can use the variances of the estimators to determine which one is better.
