Question Two An Agriculture Extension Officer is interested in knowing whether farmers who grew more maize also tended to grow more or less cotton. A total of 8 peasant farmers were surveyed to get data on the amount of maize and cotton grown. The data is provided in the table below in tonnes. \begin{tabular}{ccccccccc} \hline Maize & 6 & 20 & 6 & 7 & 11 & 14 & 13 & 16 \\ \hline Cotton & 8.5 & 7.65 & 20.4 & 10.2 & 5.1 & 7.65 & 6.8 & 21.25 \\ \hline \end{tabular} (a) Use the coefficient of correlation to determine whether there is a relationship between the quantities of maize and cotton. Mean of maize = (6+20+6+7+11+14+13+16)/8 = 93/8 = 11.625 tonnes Mean of cotton = (8.5+7.65+20.4+10.2+5.1+7.65+6.8+21.25)/8 = 87.55/8 = 10.94375 tonnes Show more…

Stephen collected data to study the effect of the total winter snowfall on the height of his corn crop the following summer. a) Use the data to calculate the correlation coefficient, r. b) Explain what this correlation coefficient tells you about the relationship between the amount of winter snowfall and the height of corn plants the following summer. Year | Snowfall, x (cm) | Corn Height, y (cm) 2015 | 173 | 182 2016 | 165 | 190 2017 | 152 | 207 2018 | 184 | 180 2019 | 178 | 184

Thirteen of Minnesota's sweet corn-producing counties were randomly selected, and the following information about their crop was recorded: acres planted (in 100 s of acres) and total production in $100 \mathrm{s}$ of tons of sweet corn. a. Investigate the relationship between the number of acres planted of sweet corn and the total tons of sweet corn produced. Include a scatter diagram, linear correlation coefficient and line of best fit, and a statement about their meaningfulness. b. If you were advising a Minnesota sweet corn grower based on the preceding information, how many tons of sweet corn, on average, can the grower expect to produce for each acre planted?

Sugar beet growers are interested in realizing higher yields and higher sucrose percentages from their crops. But do they go together? The data that follow are from the Montana sugar beet crop-values listed are by county, yield is tons per acre, and sucrose is percentage of sucrose. a. What, if any, relationship do you expect to find between the yield per acre and the sucrose percentage for sugar beets? b. Draw the scatter diagram for yield in tons per acre $(x)$ and sucrose percentage $(y)$ for the Montana data. Describe the relationship as seen on the scatter diagram. Is it what you anticipated? c. Find the linear correlation coefficient. d. At the 0.05 level of significance, is the linear correlation coefficient significantly different from zero? e. One of the ordered pairs appears to be outside of the pattern created by the other 10 ordered pairs. What effect do you think removal of this pair from the data values would have on (1) the appearance of the scatter diagram, (2) the linear correlation coefficient, and ( 3 ) the answer in part d? f. Remove Carbon County from the data and answer parts b-d. Compare the results with your answers to part e.
