Reference: Instructor's Lecture Notes. Why is the Production Possibilities Curve (PPC) concave to the origin? (Select all that apply). Because resources are assumed mobile between the different productive activities. Because the cases are very limited where the Production Possibilities Curve (PPC) can be convex toward the origin point. Because of the law of increasing opportunity costs. Because resources are not as productive in producing different good and services.

As more of one good is produced, resources that are better suited for producing that good are used up, leading to a decrease in efficiency and an increase in opportunity costs for producing additional units of that good. Show more…

Why is the shape of the production possibilities frontier (PPF) often curved instead of straight? The productive efficiency of an economy decreases as it moves from left to right along the PPF. Typically, some resources are better suited for producing one good than another, which means that there are diminishing returns when moving such resources away from producing what they are best suited for. Because the production possibilities frontier is based on the productive capabilities of a nation overall, rather than the productive capacity of an individual. To take a potential sunk cost into account, the PPF is curved to distribute the burden of the sunk cost based on allocative efficiency.

a. Upon what specific assumptions is this production possibilities curve based? b. If the economy is at point C, what is the (opportunity) cost of 2 more automobiles? c. What is the (opportunity) cost of 6 more forklifts? d. Which characteristic of the production possibilities curve reflects the law of increasing opportunity costs: its shape or its length? e. If the economy characterized by this production possibilities table and curve is producing 3 automobiles and 20 forklifts, what could you conclude about its use of available resources? The economy is efficiently utilizing its available resources. f. Is production at a point outside the production possibilities curve currently possible? No, production at a point outside the production possibilities curve is not currently possible. g. Could a future advance in technology allow production beyond the current production possibilities curve? Yes, a future advance in technology could allow production beyond the current production possibilities curve. h. Could international trade allow a country to consume beyond its current production possibilities curve? Yes, international trade could allow a country to consume beyond its current production possibilities curve. Refer to the following production possibilities table for consumer goods (automobiles) and capital goods (forklifts): Production Alternatives Type of Production Automobiles Forklifts 30 27 21 12 Show these data graphically. Instructions: Use the tool provided 'PPC' to draw a PPC curve (plot 4 points total)

A production possibilities table for DVDs and computers is shown below. Point G is an example of an inefficient point, while point F is an example of an unattainable point. b. Does the economy above demonstrate the law of increasing opportunity cost? Yes Production Alternatives Type of Production A B C D E Computers 0 20 40 60 80 DVDs 80 70 55 35 0 a. Show these data graphically, and then identify a point that indicates an inefficient use of resources and a point that indicates an unattainable combination of goods.
