Leadership is a complex process that requires leaders to critically appraise the circumstances in which they find themselves to best determine how to lead and influence those around them. There are multiple tactics a leader can employ in any given circumstance to influence a situation or their followers. Compare two leaders you have dealt with in the past. What different tactics did these leaders employ to influence situations or people? Which tactics were successful? Which tactics were not successful? As a leader, how can you critically appraise situations to make sure you select appropriate tactics for influencing a given situation?

According to the contingency theory, there is not a unique and best leadership style, instead, a leader should consider the situation in which he/she is embedded and decide which leadership style is appropriate to use. As a result, in an unfavorable situation, an autocratic leadership style or task-oriented leadership styles is more preferable than other styles. Why? 2. A good police chief and supervisor is not only required to have substantial knowledge about the department and policing skills, but is required to have leadership skills to administer effectively a police department. Please briefly discuss what are the differences between the two concepts, knowledge and leadership skills, in terms of policing management? 3. Differentiate what are external and internal locus of control. What are the characteristics of police officers who have an internal locus of control and police officers who have an external locus of control? 4. Contemporary police officers are different from their predecessors decades ago. For a police chief, monetary reward is not the only motivator they should use to motivate his or her subordinates in the police department. Please identify some other major strategies rather than monetary reward that a police chief can use to motivate police officers.
