Research Question 1:
The literature suggests that a strong predictor of client readiness to transition is the quality of teaching and one important factor to consider when teaching clients about care transition is his/her developmental age and choosing the most appropriate learning strategy for that developmental stage (p.29).
However, the usual practice for this setting is to provide all clients education about transitioning on an informal basis, at the bedside during routine care, regardless of age.
Researchers wanted to know if this generic teaching strategy resulted in poorer learning for those 81 or older as compared to their younger adult cohorts.
Prior to transition to another unit or facility, all participants were surveyed by a research assistant, who was not part of the unit, for simple recall of transition information pertinent to their situation.
Scores for each person were calculated on a ‘Transition plan recall’ scale of 0 to 10 that measured key items of transition.
The researchers divided the sample data in two groups: group one was adults 81.
They wanted to know if there was a difference in retention of care transition information as measured by ‘Transition plan recall’ for the very elderly population versus younger adult populations, when taught during routine care.
