Researchers measured the free calcium concentration in blood platelets of 12 people with normal blood pressure and 25 people with high blood pressure. The results are given in the table.
Normal: 95, 124, 108, 136, 123, 133, 115, 132, 80, 123, 130, 147
High: 110, 136, 98, 152, 108, 122, 107, 179, 97, 201, 106, 124, 189, 176, 129, 143, 165, 153, 142, 120, 133, 178, 182, 183, 140
The data for this exercise is in the SPSS dataset, BP_CALCIUM, on the course Canvas site.
a. Using summary statistics from SPSS and a hand calculator, test the hypothesis that the population variances for platelet calcium are equal for normal and high blood pressure. Use a critical value and α = 0.05.
b. With your result in part a, using summary statistics from SPSS and a hand calculator perform an appropriate test to determine whether platelet calcium means are significantly greater in the high blood pressure group than in the normal blood pressure group. Use α = 0.05.
