Researchers were interested in the relationship between the number of doctors per person in US counties and the life expectancy of its citizens. Data was collected and it was determined that a strong positive relationship exists between the number of doctors and life expectancy. In other words, as the number of doctors in a county increased, so did life expectancy. The researchers also collected data on the number of free health clinics in US counties. The number of free health clinics and life expectancy were also strongly related but negatively, meaning that as the number of free health clinics increased, life expectancy decreased.
