Scenario:
You are sitting in front of two computers. One is Linux and the other is Windows 10 or 11. The log in screen is up and you don't know the username or the password. You can't access any of the programs or files in the computer. You need to gain access to the system. How do you get logged in?
Steps to complete this assignment:
1. Research and document how to gain access to a Windows 10 or 11 computer when you do not know the username or password.
2. Using a Windows 10 or 11 computer which you are allowed to 'hack", attempt to use the tactics found in step 1 to gain access. If successful, explain the process you used to gain access and the resource you used. If unsuccessful, research at least 2 other methods (a total of 3) and attempt using these other methods. If you don't have a computer to use, describe 3 methods to gain access. You will not receive a penalty for an unsuccessful attempt or not having a computer as long as you are detailed in your descriptions.
3. If you have access to a physical Linux system (i.e. in your classroom), research and document how to gain access to the system. Actually attempt to gain access. If successful, explain the process you used to gain access and the resource you used. If unsuccessful, research at least 2 other methods (a total of 3) and attempt using these other methods. If you do NOT have access to a physical Linux system, write a description on how to gain access to a Linux system based off your research. You will not receive a penalty for an unsuccessful attempt or not having a computer as long as you are detailed in your descriptions.
4. Answer the following questions in your Word Document about your experience:
a) Were you successful in gaining access to the Windows system?
b) What tools or software did you use to gain access or attempt to gain access?
c) Describe legitimate scenarios where you may need to gain a access to a system in this manner?
d) Explain what you learned about password security while completing this lab.
e) Describe ways to protect systems from these kinds of attacks.
