This short video is discussing the concept of auto ionization and its role in chemistry.

Auto ionization has two main parts that when put together really describe the process well.

So first we have the prefix auto.

This indicates this process is automatic and it occurs without any sort of treatment or chemical condition.

This is just an automatic natural process.

The second portion is ionization.

This is simply the production of ions.

Together we see the natural or automatic production of ions by some compound.

The most common example of an auto -ionizing compound is water.

At the bottom of the screen, you'll see that water can dissociate or undergo a simple reaction to form a h -plus ion, which we also refer to as h3o -plus.

Notice here at the reaction arrow that we see equilibrium arrows.

This indicates that our reaction can go forwards and backwards.

In reality, water only ionizes just a tad bit at a time.

So if we were going to illustrate this with our arrows, we'd see more of a very small forward -air interaction, a very large backwards area.

What i mean by this is that most water is hanging out as normal liquid water, but a very small portion will undergo this auto -ionization to form these ions...
