Spinal Cord and Nerve Injuries. The spinal cord is a vital part of the central nervous system. It extends from the base of the skull, known as the foramen magnum, to the second lumbar vertebra. The spinal cord is divided into three regions: anterior, lateral, and posterior. The spinal cord ends just below a point called the conus medullaris. The cervical nerves, which originate from the spinal cord, control various functions such as breathing and movement. Injuries to the spinal cord can lead to paralysis and impaired sensory or motor function. It is important to administer intramuscular injections correctly to avoid complications such as crutch paralysis.
