Endometriosis is a benign gynecologic disease defined as the presence of uterine endometrial stroma and glands somewhere other than their natural location (i.e. uterine endometrial cavity). The most frequent places in the pelvic cavity include ovaries, uterosacral ligaments, and the recto-uterine pouch. Symptoms of endometriosis are dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, chronic pelvic pain, irregular menstruation, and/or infertility. Although endometriosis is considered to be a disease of the 21st century, the first references and related symptoms were discovered in ancient Egypt in 1500 BC. The prevalence of endometriosis in the general population is estimated at 7-10%. Endometriosis is one of the causes of primary and secondary infertility in 30% of women. Endometriosis has a complex and multifactorial etiology. The factors involved in the development of endometriosis include hormonal changes, genetic changes, and changes in the immune system. It has been well documented that endometriosis may be present for a long time before it is diagnosed. This is especially observed in European countries, as the overall delay in diagnosing the disease is ten years in Austria and Germany, eight years in Spain and the UK, seven years in Norway, seven to ten years in Italy, and four to five years in Ireland and Belgium. Although no theory can cover all the manifestations of this disease, the retrograde menstruation is widely accepted to describe the dissemination of endometrial tissue to the peritoneal cavity through open fallopian tubes during menstruation. Previous studies report that in 90% of healthy women with open fallopian tubes, menstrual blood is present in the peritoneal cavity, as shown by laparoscopy. However, it is assumed that the level and volume of retrograde menstruation and the backward movement of endometrial cells have significant effects on the emergence.

Endometriosis is a disorder in which endometrial cells implant and proliferate outside of the uterus. This can lead to the formation of endometriosis implants or lesions on various organs within the pelvic cavity, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the lining of the pelvis. These implants can cause inflammation, scarring, and pain. The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, but there are several theories. One theory suggests that during menstruation, some of the menstrual blood containing endometrial cells flows backward through the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity, where the cells implant and grow. Another theory proposes that endometrial cells may travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to reach other organs. Genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, and a weakened immune system may also play a role in the development of endometriosis. The warning signs of endometriosis can vary, but common symptoms include pelvic pain, painful periods, pain during intercourse, and infertility. Some women may also experience fatigue, bloating, and digestive issues. It is important to note that the severity of symptoms does not necessarily correlate with the extent of the disease. Some women with mild endometriosis may experience severe pain, while others with severe endometriosis may have no symptoms at all. Treatment options for endometriosis include pain medication, hormonal therapy, and surgery. Pain medication, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can help alleviate pain. Hormonal therapy, such as birth control pills or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, can help suppress the growth of endometrial tissue and reduce symptoms. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove endometriosis implants and scar tissue. Endometriosis can increase a woman's risk of infertility. The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is believed that the presence of endometriosis implants can interfere with the normal functioning of the reproductive organs. The inflammation and scarring caused by endometriosis can lead to the formation of adhesions, which can block the fallopian tubes or disrupt the release of eggs from the ovaries. Additionally, the hormonal imbalances associated with endometriosis can affect ovulation and the implantation of a fertilized egg.
