And so what potassium is going to do, this is going to form an ionic compound where essentially the electrons are completely transferred from one atom to another.

And so what it's going to do in order to become stable is completely remove that valence electron to fill that outer most energy shell one level beneath.

And then bromine is in group 17, so it has seven valence electrons, and what it's going to do is receive one valence electron in order to fill its full outer shell, get to that eight, that stable energy level.
