Static Equilibrium
A uniform beam of length 2.5m and mass 300kg is attached to a wall by a hinge. The beam is free to rotate at the hinge (see figure). The beam is maintained horizontally by a light cable attached to its other end. A mass M is resting on the beam at a distance d = 1.6m from the wall. (20 points)
a) Draw a force diagram showing the forces acting on the beam.
b) If the tension in the cable is 1800N, calculate the value of M (in kg)?
c) What is the magnitude and direction of the force exerted by the pivot point on the beam?
