18. Select the correct word from the list to complete each sentence in regards to the electron-transport chain. The electron-transport chain is a series of electron carriers in the inner mitochondrial membrane. H+ pumps transfer electrons to the electron-transport carriers and release H+. Some electron-transport carriers function as H+ pumps which move H+ to the outer mitochondrial compartment. Each H+ pump uses some of the energy in the oxidation-reduction to export a H+. The last electron-transport carrier combines electrons with oxygen and ATP synthase to form water. The H+ pass through channels formed by the enzyme ATP synthase, resulting in the formation of ATP.
