Suppose you are standing on top of a building that is h
meters tall. You throw a baseball out to a friend on the
ground below. You throw the ball horizontally with a speed of vo.
Assume your friend catches it at ground level.
a) Sketch the trajectory of the ball from the building to when it
hits the ground. Draw the ball along this path in at
least three different locations. At each of these points draw and
label horizontal and vertical velocity vectors.
b) In terms of the quantities given, derive a formula for how far,
x, from the base of the building your friend should
stand to catch the ball.
c) If the building is 28 meters tall and the initial speed is 15.75
m/s, how far away should your friend stand?
d) Draw a careful graph of vy, the vertical velocity, versus time
from the moment the ball is thrown until it is caught
by your friend.
