Surveys found that when choosing prospective marriage partners, people in more unequal countries put less emphasis on romantic considerations and more on criteria such as financial prospects, status, and ambition, than do people in less unequal societies. The authors explain that this is because men and women judge each other's value based on looks rather than on education and skills. Social status matters more in less unequal societies. Greater inequality is likely to be accompanied by increased status competition and increased status anxiety. More unequal societies are more traditional, and there are more arranged marriages, where parents are involved in choosing a partner for their children.
