Texts: A team of researchers is interested in determining the effects of physical activity on cognitive abilities in college students. They are particularly interested in the benefits following aerobic exercise relative to strength training in both male and female participants. They recruit 40 first-year students (20 female and 20 male) and randomly assign half of each sex to each of the physical activity conditions. Each subject then exercises for 40 minutes before completing a computerized version of the Cognitive Abilities Scale (CAS). Which label most accurately describes this study? a. 2-way 2 x 2 Between-Subjects design b. 2-way 2 x 2 Complex design c. 2-way 2 x 2 Mixed design d. 2-way 2 x 2 Within-Subjects design

Step 1
The study involves two independent variables: the type of physical activity (aerobic exercise or strength training) and the sex of the participants (male or female). Each of these variables has two levels, making it a 2 x 2 design. Show more…

College sophomores were given a short course in speed reading. Three groups had courses lasting for 5, 15, or 25 sessions. At the conclusion of the course, participants were asked to read a paragraph, followed by a test of comprehension. Before taking the test, participants in each group were offered a monetary incentive - no money, $1, or $10 - for a certain level of performance. The researcher collected the reading time and number of correct items on the comprehension test for each participant.

The researcher in exercise 2 decides to conduct the same study using a within-participants design to control for differences in cognitive ability. They select a random sample of subjects and have them study different material of equal difficulty in both the music and no-music conditions. The study is completely counterbalanced to control for order effects. The data appear next. As before, they are measured on an interval-ratio scale and are normally distributed; the researcher believes that studying under quiet conditions will lead to better performance. Music No music 7 7 6 8 5 7 6 7 8 9 8 8 a. What statistical test should be used to analyze these data? b. Identify H₀ and H₁ for this study. c. Conduct the appropriate analysis. d. Should H₀ be rejected? What should the researcher conclude? e. If significant, compute and interpret the effect size. f. If significant, draw a graph representing the data.

Researchers are investigating whether people who exercise with a training partner have a greater increase, on average, in targeted exercise intensity compared with people who exercise alone. Two methods of collecting data have been proposed. Method I: Recruit volunteers who are willing to participate. Randomly assign each participant to exercise with a training partner or to exercise alone. Method II: Select a random sample of people from all the people who exercise at a community fitness center. Ask each person in the sample whether they use a training partner, and use the response to create the two groups. b) Suppose the investigation produces a result that is statistically significant using both methods. What can be concluded if method I is used that cannot be concluded if method II is used? Explain your answer.
