Problem 2. Counting the Degrees of Freedom
8. For a diatomic molecule, the number of degrees of freedom it can have.
C. For a linear triatomic molecule, determine the degrees of freedom it can have.
E. Consider two identical rigid containers containing an equal number of moles of gas - one containing O and one containing CO. The temperature of both gases is high enough that vibrational modes of both gases are activated. The temperature of each container changes by the same amount. The change in internal energy of O is denoted by ΔU, and the change in internal energy of CO is denoted by ΔUco. What is the ratio ΔU/ΔUco?
