Texts: Some of the radicals below are like terms, while others are not: β2, -3β2, 2β3, 5β2, 2β5, β32
List the Like Terms here:
- β2 and 5β2
- -3β2 and 2β5
3b) Combine those like terms to write one single simplified radical (do not type!):
β2 + 5β2 = 6β2
-3β2 + 2β5 = -β2 + 2β5
3c) Explain why the leftover terms are NOT like terms with the others:
The leftover terms, 2β3 and β32, are not like terms with the others because they have different radicands. The radicand is the number inside the square root symbol. In this case, the radicand of 2β3 is 3, while the radicand of β32 is 32. Since the radicands are different, these terms cannot be combined.
