The Broken Column 1944 Frida Kahlo
The painting of The Broken Column is a powerful image. It shows Frieda in a corset that she had to wear after surgery because she was in a horrific vehicle accident. The image also shows nails all over her body. The nails shown all over her body is the way she expressed her constant pain. The image is a strong one as is shows how she endured constant pain since her accident. An iron handrail had impaled her through her pelvis, which had been fractured, and the rail had punctured her abdomen and uterus. Her spine had been broken in three places, her right leg in 11 places, her shoulder was dislocated, her collarbone was broken, and doctors later discovered that three additional vertebrae had been broken as well (2020). Frida was amazing how strong she was to endure so much pain throughout her life and still be able to enjoy it. I think representation in art today hasn’t changed very much. I believe the reach of art is more significant now. The internet, with its outreach to so many now, art can reach many more than it could before. The actual act of individuals making art, I don’t feel has changed. Art has always been around it is the means of distribution that has kept it limited to certain areas or regions.
