In April 2010, the worst oil spill ever recorded occurred when an explosion and fire on the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil-drilling rig left 11 workers dead and began releasing oil into the Gulf of Mexico. One of the attempts to contain the spill involved pumping drilling mud into the well to balance the pressure of escaping oil against a column of fluid (the mud) having a density significantly higher than that of seawater and oil. In the following problems, you may assume that seawater has a specific gravity of 1.03 and that a hypothetical subsea wellhead is 7167 ft below the surface of the Gulf. Gauge Pressure Estimate the gauge pressure (psig) in the Gulf at a depth of 7167 ft. ______psig

Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill 1. How did BP's history and culture shape decision-making on the Deepwater Horizon rig? How did the political and regulatory environment affect decision-making by BP and its partners? 2. In what ways did BP lack the appropriate safety culture? What could it have done to build a stronger safety culture? 3. Why did so many employees - engineers, managers, and rig workers - deem it appropriate to take significant risks?
