The lowest gas pressure that can be obtained in a laboratory is
about 10^-15 atm, an almost perfect vaccuum.
a) Determine the number of molecules in a 10 ml container of
such a gas when at room temperature. Indicate any assumptions you
made.
b) Determine the kinetic energy of one of these molecules.
c) Determine the total kinetic energy of the gas in the
container.
d) You have two containers filled with ordinary atmospheric air
at standard conditions. One of the containers has twice the volume
of the other.
i. Compare the average kinetic energy of a single
molecule in one container with the average kinetic energy of a
single molecule in the other.
ii. Compare the total energy of all molecules in
one container with the total energy of all molecules in the
other.
