Through initial test observations, the group learned that eye contact norms may actually be shifting, due to several factors. While the understood norm is that maintaining eye contact is the preferred and expected behavior of an individual in a conversation, averting or avoiding eye contact while talking is also increasingly practiced. The breaching experiment investigated how maintaining eye contact in conversation is received by study participants while also investigating if this social norm has indeed shifted.
