How can Bowenian, structural or strategic family systems theory provides challenges to new counselors? What are some strategies to help them be applied in individual therapy?
James K.
The behavioral parent training model begins with a careful assessment of the child's problem behavior and consequences. Then, it focuses on triadic constructions of the identified problem and aims to restructure the family hierarchy and generational boundaries. It requires the entire family to attend therapy and teaches parents to reward behavior they want increased and to ignore/punish problem behavior. Narrative therapists problems in order to free the family and individual family members from blame, re-story externalize, prescribe, and reframe. According to narrative theory, therapists should NOT take a collaborative, listening position with clients, search for flaws in the family system, consider the larger historical and political context, or help people separate from the dominant cultural narratives.
