The purpose of this research was to determine which form of relaxation was more effective for reducing aggressive and self-injurious behaviors among male teenagers. They were randomly assigned to one of the two daily treatment conditions: BRT and PMR. The frequency of aggressive and self-injurious behavior was recorded on a tally sheet. Results indicated that BRT treatment was more effective than PMR treatment.

A researcher wishes to assess the effectiveness of relaxation instruction upon subsequent self-reported chronic back pain. She selects 25 patients from those admitted to a clinic during the month of January who report extreme back pain and measures them both before and after they receive relaxation instruction. Write a non-directional alternative hypothesis for this study.

For Exercises 23–26, suggest some confounding variables that the researcher might want to consider when doing a study. York University in Toronto, Canada, stated that people who had suffered from fibromyalgia were able to reduce their pain by participating in twice-weekly yoga sessions.
