Which of the following does not contribute to the study of evolution? a. population genetics b. inheritance of acquired characteristics c. the fossil record d. DNA sequencing e. comparative morphology
In the early 1900s, after the rediscovery of Mendel's proposed laws of inheritance, a vigorous debate erupted between "biometricians," who used statistical models and noted that many traits exhibit a bell-curve distribution, and Mendelians, who relied on Mendel's laws and thought that new species or new advantageous traits ultimately came from new mutations. Biometricians believed in heredity but did not readily accept Mendel's laws because they did not easily see how mutations in single genes could create the bell-curve phenotype distribution (e.g., for height). A purely genetic solution to this apparent contradiction between Mendelians and Biometricians was quickly discovered. Which of the following did the solution entail? A. Variable Penetrance B. Single nucleotide sites may have hundreds of different alleles C. Continuous phenotypic variation can come from variation at many genes D. Strong environmental effects on a single mutation
