what is the temperature of the ocean in kelvin if it it 76 F?
Madhur L.
Seasonal temperature changes in the ocean only affect the top layer of water, to a depth of roughly 500 m. This layer which is often referred to as the mixed layer is thermally isolated from the colder, deep water below. The average temperature of the top layer of the world's ocean, which has a mass of 3.6 × 10^8 km^2, is approximately 17°C. In addition to the seasonal temperature variations, the oceans have experienced an overall warming trend over the last century that is expected to continue as the earth's climate changes. A warmer ocean means a larger volume of water, so the oceans are expected to rise. Assuming the temperature increase is only experienced by the top layer, and the area of the oceans can't change because of the fixed size of the ocean basins, any thermal expansion of the water will cause the water level to rise, as shown in the diagram. The original volume is the product of the original depth and the surface area V_i = Ad_i. And the change in volume is given by ΔV_i = AΔd. If the top 500 m of ocean water increased in temperature from 17°C to 18°C, what would be the resulting rise in ocean height? (a) 10.5 cm (b) 21.0 cm (c) 42.0 cm (d) 84.0 cm The ocean is mostly heated from the top, by electromagnetic radiation from the sun. The Warmer surface water doesn't mix much with the colder ocean water. This lack of mixing can be attributed to a lack of; (a) conduction (b) convection (c) radiation (d) evaporation
Ocean Water Temperatures: The National Oceanographic Data Center lists water temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit for beaches all around the country. Below are listed selected beach temperatures from the month of February for various coastal areas of the United States. At the 0.05 level of significance, is there sufficient evidence to conclude a difference in mean temperatures? - Southern Pacific - Western Gulf - Eastern Gulf - Southern Atlantic
