The variance/standard deviation/standard error measures how much dispersion or scatter exists around the mean of a set of values. The standard deviation/standard error is the square root of the variance, so a value for dispersion from the mean can be reported in the same units/squared units as the mean. The standard deviation/standard error value of the mean measures how well the sample mean approximates the true mean - the closer your sample mean is to the population mean, the bigger/smaller this value is.
