A study investigated the effectiveness of meditation training in reducing trait anxiety. The study evaluated subjects' trait anxiety levels before and after the study subjects participated in an 8-week training course in meditation. The difference in the pre-training and post-training trait anxiety levels was calculated for each participant. For the 25 people in the study, the mean reduction in anxiety was 4.6, and the standard deviation of the reductions was 6.7.

Some research suggests that mindfulness meditation may affect feelings of generalized anxiety. A researcher wants to investigate this and obtains a random sample of n = 25 adults who have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and has them practice mindfulness meditation for 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week. After 6 months of practice, they are given a standardized anxiety assessment (measured on a scale of 0 – 60 with 60 as worst anxiety). The mean anxiety score of the sample was calculated to be M = 41. In the general population of adults with generalized anxiety disorder, scores on the anxiety assessment form a normal distribution with a mean of μ = 45 and a standard deviation of σ = 9. Does mindfulness meditation have a significant effect on anxiety? Test with α = .05. Referencing question #1 above, calculate the value of σM (standard error) and write a sentence interpreting it in context.

Researchers report that their randomized controlled trial testing the treatment of 15 minutes of mindfulness/meditation per day on reducing test anxiety among college students has a power level of 80%. This means that: A) There is an 80% probability that the mindfulness/meditation treatment will improve test scores among college students. B) There is an 80% probability that the study will be able to detect a difference in test anxiety between those who practice the mindfulness/meditation program and those in the control group, if a difference truly exists. C) There is an 80% chance that the study will not detect a difference in test anxiety between those who practice the mindfulness/meditation program and those in the control group, even if a difference truly does exist. D) 80% of college students who practice the mindfulness/meditation program will have lowered test anxiety. E) The study has an 80% chance of Type II error. Osler-Weber-Rendu disease is a rare autosomal dominant disorder (only need to inherit one affected gene to have illness) that affects blood vessels throughout the body and results in a tendency for bleeding. Inheritance of one affected gene means that a person will always develop the disorder (although there are variations in severity). Aside from inheritance, there is no other way to contract the disorder. The causal relationship between the exposure of genetic inheritance and disease outcome in this example can be characterized as: A) Sufficient but not necessary B) Necessary but not sufficient C) Sufficient and necessary D) Neither sufficient nor necessary E) None of the above
