30 mL 1. What is the method used in the preparation of the iso-alcoholic elixir? 2. Compute for the alcoholic strength (%v/v) of the prepared low alcoholic elixir. 3. What volume (in mL) of the prepared low and high alcoholic elixir with 55% v/v alcoholic strength? 4. Why was the low alcoholic elixir allowed to stand for 24 hours? 5. Explain why turbidity occurs when an aqueous solution is added to the alcoholic solution. 6. A 60-year-old male patient was prescribed with an alcoholic elixir with 40% alcohol strength for his cough. However, he also orders aspirin for his headache. What will you tell the patient?

A physician requests that an iso-alcoholic elixir containing 30.0% alcohol be prepared. How many mL of 10% low-alcoholic elixir and 78% high-alcoholic elixir must be mixed to prepare 1000 mL of the iso-alcoholic elixir?
Adi S.
Most medications are mixtures or solutions of one or more substances. A lot of the calculations on these can be simple enough, using proportions (see for example http://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/c2nXnCnleC), while others require a bit more algebra, such as using systems of equations (see for example http://www.ck12.org/algebra/Mixture-Problems/rwa/Alcohol-Solutions-in-Nursing). Activity: Following the same process shown in the second example link provided above on mixture problems (http://www.ck12.org/algebra/Mixture-Problems/rwa/Alcohol-Solutions-in-Nursing), please set up a system of linear equations representing the following problem and solve it for the two unknowns. If a nurse has two alcohol solutions, the first (A), a 30% alcohol solution, and the second (B), a 60% alcohol solution, but needs 20 liters of a 40% alcohol solution, how much of each of these two solutions (A & B) is needed? Please show your work.
