To be aromatic, a molecule must have $4 n+2 \pi$ electrons and must have cyclic conjugation. $1,3,5,7,9-$ Cyclodecapentaene fulfilis one of these criteria but not the other and has resisted all attempts at synthesis. Explain.

Step 1
For a molecule to be aromatic, it must have $4n+2$ pi electrons, where n is an integer. In the case of 1,3,5,7,9-Cyclodecapentaene, it has 10 pi electrons, which satisfies the $4n+2$ rule. Show more…

can you explain the second one to me as well? I am having trouble understanding when the lone pairs will be playing a part in conjugation. If they do, then there will be 6 pi electrons correct? which means that the molecule is aromatic? Thank you
