Tutorial 3 A long steel plate has a thickness of 30 mm and a width of 300 mm. On the basis of the inspection technique employed, an initial edge crack of length 8.5 mm is assumed to exist as shown. The plate is subjected to a remotely applied tensile stress which varies cyclically due to 1.8 MN and 2.7 MN tensile variable loading. Determine the stress intensity factor and examine the implications of the crack as relates to the tensile stress. Take $sigma_y$=350 MN/m$^2$

Step 1
First, we need to determine the stress intensity factor (K) for the given crack. The stress intensity factor is a measure of the stress concentration at the crack tip and is used to predict the crack growth under cyclic loading. Show more…

A high strength steel plate (Figure 7-21), which has a plane strain fracture toughness of 80 MPa∑m is alternately loaded in tension to 500 MPa and in compression to 60 Mpa. The plate is to survive for 10 years with the stress being applied at a frequency of once every 5 minutes. Design a manufacturing and testing procedure that ensures that the component will serve as intended. Assume a geometry factor f=1 for all flaws. Figure 7-21 Crack growth rate versus stress intensity factor range for a high-strength steel. For this steel, C = 1.62 x 10^-12 and n = 3.2 for the units shown.

A round, 2m long steel rod (1.5 cm in diameter) is loaded to 400 MPa. Compute the force applied and the deflection of the rod. 2. An aluminum bar that was 2 ft long initially and 1 in in diameter is stretched 1/8". Compute the strain, stress, and applied load. 3. Based on the fillet stress concentration charts, what is the stress concentration factor for a right angle? If a ductile metal (tensile strength of 400 MPa) structure is under an average stress of 100 MPa and has a 90° angle in it, should it fail? Why or why not? What if the material is brittle?
