This is most often attributed to affordability. Typically houses are over 8 times the average salary, compared to half that 18 years ago. As young people often can't afford to buy, they rent property instead. However, the cost of rent makes it very difficult to save a deposit for a house. This situation traps many people into renting for longer than they want. Some young people find solutions to this problem by living with parents, so allowing them to better save a deposit, or borrowing money from family or friends to pay a deposit. Mortgage lenders also recognise the difficulties. One solution to buying high cost houses is to allow longer repayment periods.
