Using Formulas to Calculate Summary Statistics: Chapter 3
In completing this worksheet answers are to be written on the blank lines. Where additional lines are drawn under the answer you are required to discuss or explain briefly how your calculations are done.
The following files are to be used to help you complete the problems in this section. These are found in the stated Modules (Pages)
• Rounding Rules
• 1Basic Keystrokes on Page #3 in Module #1
• 2Editing Data on Page #3 in Module #1
• Constructing a Frequency Distribution on Page #5 in Module #2
• Calculating Summary Statistics Using the TI-84 PLUS on Page #7 in Module #2
8 students received the following test scores (x): 78 80 65 85 95 70 86 74. They decided to find their average performance = x̄ , and the standard deviation = S.
Use the formulas given and complete the tables when necessary, then do the calculations. Write your final answers correct to one decimal place (1 more than you have in the raw data). Put the
• data into list 1 and use the instructions found in the file on Calculating Summary Statistics Using the TI-84 PLUS on Page #7 in Module #2. Do Examples 1 – 5.
• The sample mean is (x bar) x̄ = Σx / n ; Round final answer to 1 more decimal place than x values (raw data) have
• n is the sample size; Count how many values of x you are given, n = 8
• To calculate Σx, you sum the values of x given
Example 1: The mean is, x̄ = Σx / n = / 8 = 79.1 to 1 decimal place
Examples 2 – 4 use two different formulas to calculate the standard deviation S
• The sample standard deviation is S = sqrt(Σ(x-x̄)² / (n-1))
• S is the square root of the average difference of the x values from the mean.
