Vaccine Efficacy is one minus the relative risk. And we multiply this difference by one hundred in order to express this as a percentage. Suppose a new vaccine against an infectious disease has recently been tested in an RCT to protect against death. Of the 876 children randomly assigned to the new vaccine 175 died. And of the 1774 children assigned to the placebo 533 died. Determine the vaccine efficacy to the nearest hundredth of a percent.

Step 1
To find the risk of death in the vaccine group, divide the number of deaths in the vaccine group by the total number of children in the vaccine group. \[ \text{Risk in vaccine group} = \frac{\text{Number of deaths in vaccine group}}{\text{Total number in vaccine Show more…

In a clinical trial of a vaccine, 14,000 children were randomly divided into two groups. The subjects in group 1 (the experimental group) were given the vaccine while the subjects in group 2 (the control group) were given a placebo. Of the 7,000 children in the experimental group, 86 developed the disease. Of the 7,000 children in the control group, 114 developed the disease. Determine whether the proportion of subjects in the experimental group who contracted the disease is less than the proportion of subjects in the control group who contracted the disease at the α = 0.01 level of significance. Choose the correct null and alternative hypotheses below. Determine the test statistic. (Round to two decimal places as needed.) Determine the P-value. (Round to three decimal places as needed.) What is the result of this hypothesis test?

A researcher wishes to test the effectiveness of flu vaccination. 150 people are vaccinated, 180 people are vaccinated with a placebo, and 100 people are not vaccinated. The number in each group who later caught the flu was recorded. The results are shown below. Vaccinated Placebo control Caught the flu 8 19 21 Vaccinated Placebo 142 161 79 Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that the proportion of people catching the fly is the same in all 3 groups.

A pharmaceutical company claims that a new drug is effective against COVID-19 60% of the time. The drug is tested on 24 selected patients. Use the binomial distribution to find the probability that exactly 16 patients recovered from COVID-19. (Round your answer to the nearest thousandth). What is the mean of the number of patients who recovered from COVID-19? What is the variance of the number of patients who recovered from COVID-19?
