3. Body Mass and Brain Mass in various primates:
The following is a very small portion of the data from Animal Traits - a curated animal trait database for body mass, metabolic rate and brain size¹, which collected the measurements of the brains of 2361 individual animals from 1445 species.
Figure 1: Brain and Body masses of individual females of various primate species
Genus & Species Common Name Body Mass ($kg$) Brain Mass ($kg$)
Saguinus oedipus Cotton-top tamarin 0.37 0.0097
Chlorocebus aethiops Grivet 3.22 0.0661
Macaca arctoides Stump-tailed macaque 7.45 0.0998
Papio anubis Olive baboon 12.9 0.148
(a) (3 points) Here is one of the figures from the paper, you can view it in color on canvas.
Pick any one of the primates from the table above, and indicate (roughly) which dot in the figure below represents that monkey. Make sure you indicate which monkey you are selecting.
b)
Figure 2: Overview of the ranges of trait values in the database at time of publication. Each point represents a single observation of (b) body mass and brain size. To orient the reader, some taxa with outstanding trait values are labelled in the graph. The differing allometries of endotherms and ectotherms are apparent for both metabolic rate and brain size. Axes are log-scaled.
