Problem B: Empathy means being able to understand what others feel. To see how the brain expresses empathy, researchers recruited 16 couples in their mid-twenties who were married or had been dating for at least two years. They zapped the man's hand with and electrode while the woman watched and measured the activity in several parts of woman's brain that would respond to her own pain. Brain activity was recorded as a fraction of the activity observed when the woman herself was zapped with the electrode. The women also completed a psychological test that measures empathy. They are specifically interested to see whether women who score higher in empathy respond more strongly (higher brain activity) when their partner has a painful experience.

Neural synchronization does not occur for signals greater than 5000 Hz. Adaptation is an increase in the discharge rate over time. When phase-locking occurs, the auditory nerve responses mimic the time waveform of the signal. The dynamic range of an auditory nerve fiber is approximately 100 dB. One auditory nerve fiber can account for our large dynamic range of hearing. Spread of excitation along the basilar membrane contributes to our large dynamic range of hearing. The timing difference between neural spikes happening for a 2000 Hz signal and a 1000 Hz signal helps to code frequency information.
