E-Cigarette use (vaping) is an emergent risk factor for serious respiratory disease. A number of early epidemiological studies conducted in American high schools have demonstrated that there is a strong link between vaping and hospitalized respiratory symptoms, while the links with chronic disease remain to be seen. Assume that the studies that have been conducted are "internally valid" (free from known biases). The summary relative risk suggests a 3-fold increase in risk for hospitalized respiratory conditions associated with heavy vaping among these high school students. Think together about whether these findings can be generalized beyond high school students in the USA. In your opinion, are these findings of an increased risk generalizable beyond the study populations, i.e., are they externally valid?
