A certain researcher named Ana hypothesizes that the ability to think flexibly develops over childhood. She therefore recruits some children and administers the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), a test of executive function that is widely used clinically. In the WCST, participants learn by trial and error to sort cards by one of three stimulus dimensions: shape, color, or number. For example, if color is the rule, then red shapes should be sorted into a pile with other red shapes. From time to time, the sorting rule changes, but the participant is not told this and must figure it out by trial and error. They often continue to use the old rule even when it is not correct, making what are called perseverative errors. Participants with good cognitive flexibility commit fewer of these perseverative errors when the rule changes. Suppose that it is known from previous research that the mean number of perseverative errors for adults is 8.2. Problem 3: {9.4.11, p. 358} {9.4.11, p. 378}. Each of 36 men was asked to touch the foreheads of three women, one of whom was their romantic partner, while blindfolded. The two "decoy" women were the same age, height, and weight as the man's partner. Of the 36 men tested, 18 were able to correctly identify their partner. Do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that men can do better than they would do by merely guessing? Conduct an appropriate test.
