Atmospheric stability is determined by comparing the temperature of the air parcel to that of its surrounding environment. If the temperature of the air parcel is warmer than that of its environment, the parcel is less dense than the surrounding air and it will rise, much like a hot air balloon. Conversely, if the air parcel is cooler than the surrounding air, the air parcel will sink, much like a brick in water.

10. Would you expect thunderstorms (tall clouds) when the temperature of the environment high in the atmosphere is cool or warm? Circle your answer. Why do you believe this to be the case?
11. In terms of vertical movement, what do you think will happen to an air parcel if its temperature is the same as the surrounding environment?
