Think about our prison systems. Many folks think the role of the prison system is to punish people who break the law, and that we should have more prisons to punish more people. But let's look at what happens to the average burglar. If (s)he is caught, (s)he will probably not go to trial for a year or two and then is likely to get probation or a light sentence. If (s)he does go to prison, (s)he is unlikely to learn any useful skills and will meet other criminals who will probably not be good role models. Additionally, (s)he may not end up serving his/her entire sentence due to overcrowding conditions in prisons. Given what you know about learning, cognition, and social influences, critique the way our current prison system works and suggest some better ideas. Be sure to be specific about the principles that you have learned from this course. And, make sure you address, at a minimum, learning theory, cognitive psychology, and social psychology.

Discussion Assignment: Select a news article where an offender is sentenced to prison for an offense in which they might have successfully remained in the community instead. In our readings for this module, we examine the many alternatives to incarceration and how many low-risk offenders are unnecessarily incarcerated and would have been more appropriately sentenced to one of these alternatives (e.g., probation, drug treatment, electronic monitoring). This topic will require students to assess and articulate reasons an alternative sanction would be worth considering. You may find that not all cases would merit something other than prison; some offenders justifiably should be incarcerated for lengthy terms. But that is not the case for all. Remember to post a link to the article and to make the required peer postings.
