Electrons coming out of the negative terminal of a battery have high electrical potential energy. Electrons entering the positive terminal have low electrical potential energy. Suppose we take a long wire and connect one end to the negative terminal of a battery and the other end to the positive terminal (unless the wire is quite long, this is dangerous, so don't do it). As electrons travel through the wire from the negative terminal to the positive terminal, they clearly lose electrical potential energy. What energy transformation takes place in the wire?
Electrons have high potential energy here.
Electrons have low potential energy here.
