So this question says gender -based stereotypes are presented through the mass media.
00:04
Locate an article, cartoon, or advertisement that conveys a gender message and analyze that message by answering the following questions.
00:13
So i have this ad here from mr.
00:17
Clean.
00:19
I'm highlighting the url up here just in case you would want to include that.
00:24
Otherwise, you could do a quick google search of the mr.
00:28
Clean gender ad, and this will pop right up on google.
00:32
But if we begin to analyze this, the first question says, what is the message the media is trying to convey? so if we look at this ad, it says this mother's day, get back to the job that really matters.
00:45
And then we have a mother cleaning and showing her daughter.
00:51
And then, yeah, that whole picture is to me, it's conveying the message of a woman's worth.
01:03
Or value is really tied into what she's able to do in her household.
01:08
So if we, the next question, i'm going to also answer parts of the next question.
01:15
It says, what examples are used to convey this message? so if you look at the language that is used, get back to the job that really matters.
01:23
It makes it seem as though nothing else that the woman does is really of value.
01:31
But what really matters is her being able to clean and being able to pass this information or these skills along to her daughter.
01:41
And then once again, the depiction of the woman with a smiling face, happily cleaning and the daughter pointing, taking mental note and also happily, you know, assisting in this process, it just makes it seem like the happiness is tied to cleaning and being able to pass it along to the daughter.
02:01
And i think more broadly, if we just not, i think that the cleaning aspect could be used as a metaphor to think about the bigger picture of conveying a message that a woman's value, real value, is being able to take care of the household, right? so being able to cook, being able to clean, being able to take care of the children, being able to take care of her husband.
02:31
And just taking care of the home while her husband is away, right? and then the idea that she has to teach her daughters to do the same thing to keep this generational thing going along.
02:47
And so the next question is, does this message fit a gender role stereotype? and the answer is yes, most definitely.
02:54
Like i said, this was a big thing in the past where women stayed at home and took care of the household while their husband went away to work to provide the money.
03:05
So with women staying home, like i said, they cook, they clean, they care for the children...
