How does spending time in a mental health clinic experience impact the carry provide and individuals in the acute and chronic psychiatric behavioral or cognitive patient population?

- Stakeholders: patients and care providers (clinicians, therapists, nurses, support staff, and family/caregivers). - Setting: mental health clinics (outpatient, partial hospitalization, day programs, or short-term crisis stabilization). Show more…

In a study of major depression, a clinician examined the effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy on time spent with others. She exposed a sample of patients with major depression (n = 36) to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). After their therapy, this sample of patients spent an average of M = 82 minutes a day engaged with others. She compared their mean to the national average of adults with major depression (and no treatment) in the United States (μ = 76 minutes a day; σ = 12). The researcher predicts that cognitive-behavioral therapy will change the time spent with others. Conduct a significance test by following these steps: Step 1. Express the substantive question as two statistical hypotheses. H0: μ1 = 76 H1: μ1 ≠ 76 Step 2. Choose a sample statistic to assess the statistical hypotheses. Draw the sampling distribution under the null hypothesis. Use p < .05 (unless another criterion is defended) as the criterion for statistical significance to determine the critical values. The shape of the distribution of means is roughly normal (bell shaped) If H0 is true, then the most frequent sample mean is μ1 = 76 Step 3. If needed, compute the sample mean (M). Compute the standard error (SE). Transform a descriptive statistic (M) into a test statistic (e.g., zobs or tobs). Determine the p-value (the exact value) under the null hypothesis. Determine both the confidence intervals. Calculate the d-effect size. Step 4. Write the results in APA style.

A patient was admitted to an acute care setting 7 days ago for treatment of severe depression. OT intervention throughout the week focused on identifying meaningful roles, habits, and routines, and using positive self-talk to complete ADL. What additional activities would support carry-over of this intervention after discharge? • Assist the patient to establish a daily schedule of activities for resuming previous roles. • Teach the patient ways to integrate relaxation exercises into typical daily routines. • Provide the patient with handouts that include guidelines for establishing healthy habits.
