Calculation of Confidence Intervals for Population Mean On Tuesday, 11-5-2013, a sample of size 82 was taken with a mean of 82.4 and a sample standard deviation (s) of 23.1. We need to construct confidence intervals for the population mean (μ) at different confidence levels. a) 80% confidence interval: The sample mean deviation (s) is 23.1. Using the formula for the confidence interval, the margin of error (E) can be calculated as follows: E = (z)(s/∙∙n) = (1.282)(23.1/∙∙82) = 3.207 Therefore, the 80% confidence interval for the population mean is (82.4 - 3.207, 82.4 + 3.207) = (79.193, 85.607). b) 95% confidence interval: The sample mean deviation (s) is 23.1. Using the formula for the confidence interval, the margin of error (E) can be calculated as follows: E = (z)(s/∙∙n) = (1.96)(23.1/∙∙82) = 4.759 Therefore, the 95% confidence interval for the population mean is (82.4 - 4.759, 82.4 + 4.759) = (77.641, 87.159). c) 99% confidence interval: The sample mean deviation (s) is 23.1. Using the formula for the confidence interval, the margin of error (E) can be calculated as follows: E = (z)(s/∙∙n) = (2.576)(23.1/∙∙82) = 6.285 Therefore, the 99% confidence interval for the population mean is (82.4 - 6.285, 82.4 + 6.285) = (76.115, 88.685).

Question 6 You will obtain five confidence intervals. In order to be 95% confident that all of the intervals contain their respective parameters, what confidence level should you use for each interval? 90% 91% 95% 99% Question 7 You will obtain eight confidence intervals. In order to be 98% confident that all of the intervals contain their respective parameters, what confidence level should you use for each interval? 90% 98% 98.2% 99.75%
