Beginning in the 1940s/50s, a group of historians began to reexamine the Reconstruction governments and determined they were bold experiments in interracial politics led by people who, though not perfect, showed genuine concern for the rights of former slaves. They were surprisingly good at implementing their agenda. However, they didn't fully understand the nature of southern politics. They also felt that the federal government hadn't done enough to punish the South.

Why was slavery so important to the Southern political leaders that they seceded?
