Reanalyze the bone in Exercise 6.2 assuming that Mp/R is proportional to the radial gradient of stress. Assume that a positive stress gradient produces resorption (Mp/R < 0) and a negative stress gradient produces formation (Mp/R > 0). (A positive stress gradient is defined as one in which the stress becomes more tensile or less compressive, as one approaches the surface from within the bone matrix.) Let the rate constant be the same for formation and resorption, and for the periosteal and endosteal surfaces. Discuss the variations of the results in Exercises 6.2 through 6.4 and how they compare with the experimental results described in this chapter.
