In this scenario, you will be a social worker in the office of Child Protective Services in The Heights. You have been assigned to meet with a woman named Vivienne Smith, who has been referred to the agency due to allegations of domestic abuse from her boyfriend. Over the course of this scenario, you'll work with Vivienne to develop a map of her support systems and learn more about how this network of support can help improve her situation. You are about to begin your first meeting with Vivienne Smith at the office of Child Protective Services (CPS). Vivienne’s case was referred to Child Protective Services (CPS) after the police were called to her house following a domestic incident where Vivienne’s boyfriend hit her and threatened to kill her. Vivienne’s two sons, Michael (16), and Derek (14), witnessed the attack, thus, initiating an investigation of child abuse or neglect by CPS. You: Hi, Vivienne. Thank you for coming in today. I know things have been stressful and I want to tell you about my role and the process. Vivienne: I am quite worried about losing my kids. He never hurt them. I made sure that they were always safe. You: I understand this is quite stressful. I want to let you know that we are not here to take your children. I am meeting with you today to make sure you and the children are safe. I see that you got an order of protection from family court and have gone to the Family Resource Center for services, which is great. Vivienne: Yes, I am doing everything I can to protect my kids. You: My role is to meet with you to help educate you about additional services that may be helpful to you and your children. He is an African American male who is often referred to as Mr. H and is seen as a big brother or father figure by the students. Michael is meeting with Mr. H to discuss his mixed feelings related to being accepted at Hamilton Heights High School. Michael is a 16-year-old African American male presenting with symptoms of anxiety and adjustment disorder. Michael has always done exceptionally well academically and has been accepted into a competitive high school, Hamilton Heights High School, beginning next year. Michael expresses anxiety because the new school is rigorous academically and consists of primarily white students and staff. Michael states that he fears he will not succeed because he will be a small fish in a big pond instead of the big fish he is now. Michael witnessed domestic violence in the home between his mother and stepfather. Although Michael resides with his mother and stepfather, his biological father continues to be involved, seeing Michael at least once a week and providing financial support. Michael’s father is unaware of the domestic violence. Derek is a 14-year-old African American male presenting with a history of school difficulty and family conflict. It has been reported by Derek’s teachers that he struggles with focus while in the classroom, resulting in decreased academic performance. Derek also has a history of acting our behaviors, such as a recent incident of violence where Derek got into a physical altercation with another student. Addamsville High School (AHS) is a large neighborhood school with a diverse student body. The school admits students who are zoned for the school in addition to others from across Addamsville. Like many other large schools, AHS have a large and diverse course catalog. For instance, in addition to traditional English classes there are courses such as Speech, Mythology, or The Spoken Word. There’s also a broad range of extracurricular activities, including clubs, music and theater performances, sports teams, and the school’s newspaper. In recent years the school has expanded its arts programs and added options that focus on science and technology. also like many other large schools, AHS serve a broad range of learners. There are honors courses in all academic subjects, Advanced Placement, and other college-level courses for students ready for the challenge. There is also a range of class settings and supports for struggling learners, English-language learners, and recent immigrants who arrive with interrupted education and perform well below grade level. There is a full range of services and class settings, including self-contained and ICT (Integrated Collaborative Teaching) classes. Roughly one-quarter of Hamilton Heights High School's top graduates goes to Ivy League or other highly selective colleges. Hamilton Heights High School is a hard place for a B student.
