Carlos is a 14-year-old boy who currently lives with his aunt Sasha in NY State. Originally from Mexico, Carlos was living with his parents in Texas until both parents were incarcerated and he was sent to live with his aunt six months ago. His father is expected to be sentenced to a long prison term and be deported for drug trafficking. His mother was also charged but for a lesser crime. She remains in jail, and it is not clear what will happen with her. Carlos says he misses his mother very much, and that he loves Mexico and is proud of being Mexican. He dreams of making tortillas and other Mexican foods with his mother the way he used to when he lived in Mexico. Carlos writes to his mom every week and has been able to speak to her briefly on the phone occasionally, but she has not responded to his letters.
Sasha, who is several years younger than Carlos's mother and only 13 years older than Carlos, has a part-time job and is a full-time university student, and says she does not know if she can continue to provide care for him. He has grown increasingly angry and aggressive and does not respect her authority or follow any of the house rules. When she asks him to do anything around the house or
