According to a Wall Street Journal article on power company NextEra and its CEO Jim Robo, when Mr. Robo took over in 2002, the wind industry was small and mostly unprofitable. Wind represented 0.3% of electricity generated, according to federal statistics. In 2018, wind turbines generated about 6.5 percent of electricity in the United States. The article also notes that a key factor helping NextEra to grow was federal subsidies of electricity generated by wind turbines.
