Texts: Answer the statement using information in the passage only. Mercury 13 was a United States Space Programme to train 13 women astronauts. Astronauts took the same physically and mentally demanding program of training and tests as the men on the NASA Mercury Program. The men’s program was state-funded while Mercury 13 relied on private funding. At 23 years old, a young woman called Wally Funk was one of the Mercury 13. She excelled within the training and testing as one of its highest performers, regardless of gender. Before the last test, funding for the program was stopped, and the women never got to travel to space. One of the Mercury program astronauts was John Glenn, a male astronaut who did go to space as part of the Friendship 7 mission in 1962. In 1963, Russia had Valentina Tereshkova as part of the Vostok 6 mission - she became the first woman in space. It was possible to compare the suitability of men and women in tests.
